Brown Boots vs. Black Boots | Which Color Is Better For YOU?

1852 ratings | 121798 views
So you’ve decided to buy a new pair of boots. Maybe you’re expanding your shoe collection, or maybe this will be your first pair of boots. This video will help you pick the right color. It's brought to you in partnership with Thursday Boot Company: https://thursdayboots.com/modestman Of course, you’ll need to pick the right type of boot. If you’re not sure about white type of boot is the best choice for you, check out my video about the three best types of boots for men (link below). No matter which type of boot you settle on, you’ll need to choose a color. While there are many different colors of boots, the two most common are black and brown. Both are excellent choices for almost anyone, including guys who are buying their first pair of boots. In fact, many men have both colors in their collection. But if you could only chose one, which is the best color for you? In my opinion, there is no universal “best” choice. It all comes down to your personal preferences and situation. evrybody today say "hay no black on casual shoes" only for formal occasions. I say NO! Now evrybody walk with brown shoes. And colour dont make your loafers or derby shoes formal . Black looks so good with denim and give this a little higher style to the casual look. I like brown , burgundy but this stupid rules no brown in town or black=formal i hate this
ziggyplay (15 days ago)
horrible chelsea boots style, you should go for the classic design with a very thin shoe sole.
The Modest Man (15 days ago)
You should go for that style IF you want that style. It’s totally subjective. Lots of guys are wearing Chelseas more casually these days.
Filu Carcamo (17 days ago)
Why not both?
67spankadelik (25 days ago)
I would think buy what you need now and get the other later. Not having both is a limit on what you can wear.

Black for formal, brown for casual.

Copped a pair of brown scout boots from Thursday Boot company but found that they run a little too big. Go 1 and a half size smaller than normally.

Brown boots look better in the day and Black boots look better at night.
Doroteo Garcia (1 month ago)
Brown boots wear them in the day and Black boots wear them at night.

I have a bad habit of wearing outdated clothing styles that reflect like i stepped out of the 1930-40's,lol. With anything like a grey suit coat and matching trousers, i wear brown boots or shoes with that style and a matching color fedora, lol. Otherwise ,when i wear actual jeans and a t shirt i wear either black or brown boots, so it kinda varies, depending on the function i'm attending. When i wear desert boots i wear thesehttp://onlinemilitaria.net/products/3427-UK-Desert-Boots/ . I have two pairs , with which i dyed one pair brown, the other black. Anyone could also just leave em as they are (grey-ish) in color and go with that too.
Naokatsu (1 month ago)
Brown is for casual wear. So always wear brown shoes unless you want to be formal. Thats how I been taught
Wich app or page you use to look those outfits ? Its like pinterest or something?

Francisco Oyarzo Casanello those albums live on Imgur, and they were put together by reddit MFA users (links in description).

i think black boots look more dressy especially with chelsea boots. so i like brown boots more because you can both dress them up and dress them down
Angel Ponce (1 month ago)
A question to help all the small, slim footed gentlemen! It’s extremely difficult to find good boots that fit and don’t look feminine (not that there’s anything wrong with that.) Is there a boot company that runs smaller? I’m about a 6 to 6.5 in boots it seems, and most places don’t carry under 7 or even 8! Is there hope???

What jacket are you wearing in this video?
JamesDelta (1 month ago)

The Modest Man (1 month ago)
JamesDelta this is the Peter Manning Tribeca field jacket in olive (size 1). One of my all time favorites!
C.E. Parks (1 month ago)
I know I'm late to the party, but black shoes are FORMAL. If you wear them otherwise, fine, but you are wearing them incorrectly.
The Modest Man (1 month ago)
C.E. Parks if you’re talking about dress shoes like Oxfords, I agree. But boots and sneakers aren’t necessarily formal, even if they’re black.
Jacquelyn (1 month ago)
Clicked on the video because those black Chelsea boots are stunning
Supreme Brick (2 months ago)
Just waiting to be able to afford them.
Violent Immortal (2 months ago)
I could never get a pair of Chelsea boots they're so girly and gross
Me Too (2 months ago)
Hey Brock, I have a question. I own a pair of dark brown cap toe boots but I think they are more dressy with a slimmer profile than the Thursday’s Boot you have. Could I use my “dressier” boots in a more casual way the same way I would with a more rugged looking Thursday boot? I would like to use them to achieve a casual rugged look with them. I bought my pair so that they could be more versatile. What do you think?

Underskjær Productions (5 months ago)
I have a black feline-buckle guccibelt so I think my best choice is to pair them with black chelsea boots, a nice black leatherjacket and some darkwashed jeans. I think the black one's are more badass and should only go with other black leather clothing. I think I'll buy some cognac monk-straps as my brown dressy shoes. Then, if I like them I'll get some brown boots too.
Javier Fernandez (6 months ago)
I preffer Brown, because this color on particular get differents tones, that combine And Match whith pants ,all chinos colors,,chocolate, dark brown, soft brown, honey Brown, caramel brown,coñac,brandy,Middle brown,coffee,etc..You get a lot posibilities to dress any outfit.

At minute 0:23, what is that pair of shoe at the far left called? Any links? I'm not sure why you put it next to the two boots because I initially thought they were boat shoes but are they just brown leather sneakers?
The Modest Man (6 months ago)
That is a camp moccasin (also called a voucher moc). It’s like a boat shoe that you can wear with socks. Best suited for fall and winter but it can definitely be a year round shoe, and you can wear it sockless since it’s fully leather lined. This particular one is from LL Bean.

I'm in the UK and here where I live at least, I really only see like 80% streetware and 20% rugged haha The new world And then here I am trying to look like I'm from the 17th Century with a white dress shirt, black leathers and black overcoat x)
Birki gts (7 months ago)
I own both but i tend to wear my black boots more often, it just suits my casual style better. Brown for me is more reserved to dressing up a bit, a date, interview, etc.

Rex Erection (7 months ago)
Depends. How formal do you want to be?
James H (7 months ago)
The difference between brown boots and black boots is the colour.
tat8johny (7 months ago)
I think that brown boots are for the daytime and black for the night.
ConRon (7 months ago)
That’s hard. Black goes with nearly everything and is a little dressier but brown is nice and casual. I have both
Chris Lim (6 months ago)
BLACK LEATHER will NEVER go out in fashion. Yea.
ConRon (7 months ago)
Chris Lim I’m aware, but when the item is identical, Black will always be more dressier. The “dressiest” situation you can be in is black tie, which requires black.
Chris Lim (7 months ago)
ConRon Black leather can be casual or dressy.
tom jens (7 months ago)
there is a nice infogram on the internet, where it is shown that brown shoes fit with every color pants except black. Black shoes do not fit with more than just one color pants. Brown is a no braner for those that do not like black pants :)

Brown ages very well, black really doesn't show much age. Overall dark brown is a much more versatile boot.
Jaynern Abideen (8 months ago)
Brown boot is better. its ageing beautifully create its own character.
Givi Karbelashvili (8 months ago)
Hey Brock, what other brands would you recommend for black Chelsea boots besides Thursday Boot Co? I'm thinking of Allen Edmonds Liverpools. Any suggestions? Thanks:)
joshpembers (8 months ago)
What about width sizing?  With my New Balance athletic shoes or my more Dress shoes, I order 2E with ((and the Thursday boots only come with a D medium width.  Do I need to order a size larger?  Or do I need to find boots from a different manufacturer. I really like several of the boots available from Thursday ... but not sure they will work out??  I suppose they would take a "return" if sent back right away...or maybe not?   Any suggestions?  Thank you, Ron.

I highly prefer brown but require at least 1 black pair of shoes/boots that fit the army regs because of the army.

I saw on instagram that you liked the business "trendy butler". I like the concept behind that business, but I stay away from these kind of businesses since, well, I'm short. I doubt a stylist will be able to send something that will fit me, and I don't think they will tailor anything specifically for me since there is a chance I will return it. What are your thoughts on businesses like trendy butler? Do you recommend I try them out? Do you have any other suggestions of similar companies that work for short guys? I'm your size and dimensions except a few inches shorter.
Rev. James C (9 months ago)
After spending a small fortune on boots and shoes this past year, I realise that I don’t have a single pair of black footwear.
Rev. James C (7 months ago)
Chris, Be calm. I actually did have a pair of black Dr Martens when writing the above comment. But they are more of a work boot. Since then I purchased a nice pair of Church’s cap-toe shoes, the Consul. So I’m officially normal. 😉
Chris Lim (7 months ago)
Rev. James C Buy at least a dozen pairs of black leather ones, dude! A dude that has no black leather clothing is not normal.

Ah I get it. Those are actually sound dampening panels. They're kind of like thin cloth squares.

The Modest Man (9 months ago)
I'm pretty thin myself (under 120 lbs), so anything you see me wearing should work okay for you.
D Bar (9 months ago)
I'd go with brown boots. They are very versatile and can go well with almost anything (compared to black boots). But I would also throw in a pair of burgundy/oxblood boots - just for a fun twist.

Notice you gravitate towards rubber sole over leather. Is there a reason for that?

So black boots go with navy even though they're similar colors?
The Modest Man (10 months ago)
Yes, black shoes go well with navy suits and trousers. For example, a dark navy suit with sleek black Chelsea boots = very dapper.
J (10 months ago)
Dude. You need to come to Thailand. American chicks are dumb i.e. Whitney Cummings. It hurts seeing the pain on your face. You're a good guy.
The Modest Man (10 months ago)
You sure you're on the right video??
Alex Dc (10 months ago)
Great vid. I think I made the mistake with my shoes selection by watching a lot of other videos and vlogs from other YouTubers. Boots usually give you a little more room to play because they also have a purpose during winter.
Pyridius (10 months ago)
Another great video! I find your videos are consistently high quality and they're done very well. The editing is nice and simple and doesn't always have a list format.
The Modest Man (10 months ago)
Thank you! I'm trying to keep it straightforward, no hype and easy to watch.
Myrslokstok (10 months ago)
They should be a bit moore dressy, lightbrown, medium brown or dark brown, is a very nice first pair. Would not go tan brown. 1) Works better at spring and "summer". 2) Get a nice patina with age. 3) Deeper dept in full grain lether. 4) But go kind of dressy with brown. But agree otherwise, you are kind of right again.
Arthur Doctolero (10 months ago)
My style I'm developing is kinda schizophrenic. I wear brown shoes when I'm wearing Oxford shirts, poloshirts, and chinos at work. I wear black boots when I wear my "rocker" look on weekends.
Chris Lim (7 months ago)
Arthur Doctolero You should rock more often.
050156jg (10 months ago)
Both appeal to me. However, I would like to know if a pair of side zip pair of boots (Chelsea boot height) in my collection are still in style? Or should I retire them? Please get back to me with your opinion. Thanks.

I like black, maybe I'm just younger so I like that edgier look, I do wear a lot of black like black jeans and black jackets too hah
Mr Dobalina (2 days ago)
I have no idea what you guys mean when you say “edgy”.
Chris Lim (7 months ago)
Trevor Sebastian Black leather is the way to go! It goes well with anything. It is versatile, cool, bad ass, manly, edgy and hot as well. I'm a black leather cladded dude all the way. Personally, I think ALL dudes should wear black leather and make shit color leather extinct. They represent real bad fashion sense in a dude.
Corey Saunders (10 months ago)
Not a fan of black leather shoes, brown is so versatile these days it's hard to find an excuse to wear black for me. Unless I'm wearing an all black suit and/or dressed for an event I always reach for a cognac brown or suede book/oxford/loafer.
Zawadi Shop (8 months ago)
Corey Saunders definitely brown, makes other colors pop.
RacksonRacksonRibss (8 months ago)
You don't have to wear black shoes with blue suit to look good lol. If you don't want the extreme contrast of light brown/tan go for dark brown or eggplant, like a color8. Still looks very classy without the 'WHAT ARE THOSE?' contrast. ...I have noticed a lot of guys pairing blue suits with light brown/tan shoes, and agree with @Duke Of Prunes in that it's getting old. Especially when they're clearly some cheap, glued sole shoes.
Duke Of Prunes (8 months ago)
Corey Saunders There is no point in dressing up if you do it poorly. That said, I am sorry for being rude. I get a bit carried away when discussing shoes.
Corey Saunders (8 months ago)
Wow these comments are unnecessarily rude. Come on fellas hopefully we are all grown here, let's act like it.
Duke Of Prunes (8 months ago)
Corey Saunders Brown shoes with a blue suit look like you are either trying to draw attention to your shoes (why?), or maybe you do not have a wife to set out your clothes every night? Stop being a cheap-ass and buy some goddamn BLACK shoes, already.
